Everything you need to know about plant pots
A potted history, if you will
A lot of people ask us how they should pot their houseplants. Do you need to repot them? What's a decorative pot? What size pot does your indoor plant need? All those questions have very simple answers, so let's cover the basics.
What pot will my plant arrive in?
Patch plants are delivered in a nursery pot. What's a nursery pot? It's the plastic pot your plant has been growing in for most of its life, at the plant nursery. It’s very happy in there. It has plenty of space for its roots and the pot has holes in the bottom so water can drain freely. You don't need to do any repotting. Leave your plant in the nursery pot and just pop that inside a decorative pot, as shown in the video below 👇.
What size decorative pot do I need?
Nursery pots are practical but they're not very pretty. That's why you put it inside a decorative pot, which are much more attractive. We have decorative plant pots in all kinds of different colours and materials. How do I water my plant?
Excellent question. The best way to water your plant is to lift the nursery pot out of the decorative pot and place it in a sink. Water your plant until you see water come out of the holes in the bottom of the nursery pot, then leave it in the sink for half an hour or so. This will give time for excess water to drain away. Then put it back in its decorative pot.
If your plant is too large to lift, you can water it while it's still in its decorative pot, but be careful not to overdo it. You want the soil lightly moist, not soggy. What you don't want is water sitting in the bottom of the decorative pot. Plants don't like to sit in water as it can cause their roots to rot.
When should I repot my plant?
You only need to repot your plant when it outgrows its current nursery pot, which will take a while. It should be very happy in its current pot for at least a year. You’ll know it’s time to repot when you see roots poking out of either the holes in the bottom of the nursery pot or the soil at the top. Repotting is pretty simple.
