  • Agapanthus absolutely insist on being noticed, growing tall and proud and then bursting into colour with big globes of purple and white flowers. As part of a flower collection or just on their own, they’ll look showstopping.

Agapanthus originate from South Africa, so they really enjoy sun. Plant them in the brightest spot in your outdoor space, so they can soak up as many rays as possible. Water them frequently, so the soil remains moist, but make sure any excess can drain out of the bottom of the pot. They may need watering daily in really hot weather.

To grow your flowers, plant the bulbs in spring once the risk of frost has gone. Get them going inside from March, or plant them directly outside from May - it’s usually a little warmer by then. You can plant your bulbs straight into borders and beds, or pop them in a nursery pot or decorative pot with drainage holes. Plant them 10 cm deep with the nose facing upwards and around 45 cm apart so they have space to grow.

Flowers will appear from July to September. Deadhead regularly to encourage more flowers and feed your plants with a potash-rich fertiliser throughout the summer. The flowers will die back in winter, but keep your eyes peeled - they’ll be back again next year in spring.
