  • With its spectacular bright green ruffled leaves, the Japanese bird’s nest fern is a total showstopper. Originating in Eastern Asia, this plant is a distinctive but easy to look after addition to your fern collection.

Like most ferns, the Japanese bird’s nest fern enjoys moist soil and plenty of humidity. When you give it a drink, water the edge of the soil rather than the base of the plant. This will stop water collecting in the crevices, which can cause the rot. In the wild, these plants can be found growing in trees or on rocks, but it will do just as well in a pot in your home.

If you spot any brown leaves, just snip them off and give your plant a bit more humidity by placing it in a steamy bathroom or misting it daily. Although it’s a slow grower, you can turn your plant regularly to encourage even growth.

    Did you know?

When fully grown, this fern can reach up to a metre tall. But it’s a slow grower, so you won’t need to worry about that any time soon.
