  • With its fabulous fan-shaped leaves, a windmill palm makes an excellent evergreen addition to your outside space. Originally from China and Japan, this outdoor plant has been carefully cultivated for thousands of years. It’s a firm favourite for bringing the jungle vibes to patios, balconies and courtyards.

This palm is particularly tough, and once established won’t need much care at all. A little light watering and sheltered spot is all it needs to thrive. If you spot any brown leaves around the bottom of the plant, just trim them off. This plant will be fine in a frost, but if it’s extremely cold for a while you might want to think about wrapping the base in hessian or fleece. As outdoor plants go, it’s also very resistant to bugs, so you won’t need to worry about sending any creepy crawlies packing.

Once planted out, these palms can grow up to 15m tall - but don’t worry, that can take up to 20 years. If you’re lucky, you might spot small yellow flowers in the summer.

    Did you know?

Windmill palms are tougher than most when it comes to pollution, so they’re particularly ideal for urban gardens.
