    • Medium light

He’s happiest in a bright spot but away from direct sun, which will burn his leaves. He can take light shade too.

    • Humidity

His leaves are quite delicate, so he likes to be misted every couple of days to stop them drying out.

    • Regular watering

Water Luca evenly when the top two inches of his soil are dry. Increase your watering slightly over summer and cut back a bit in winter.

  • Talk about a statement piece, this unusual architectural palm deserves pride of place. Commonly called the Fan palm for a reason, its large fronds are held on sturdy stems that concertina out in gorgeous rich-green waves, with ruffled tips adding a decorative edge.

Native to Vanuata and other subtropical areas of South East Asia, Licuala grandis grows as an understory plant beneath towering trees, meaning that it enjoys bright filtered light, a warm humid atmosphere and regular watering to keep its soil lightly, consistently moist. It’s a slow growing palm so will retain its upright shape, with new leaves emerging from its central crown.

This king of palms will enjoy a regular dose of plant food throughout the growing season and will benefit from having its fronds wiped down with a damp cloth to keep them dust free, and a regular spritz with bug control spray to keep them pest free.

    Did you know?

Licuala grandis is hermaphrodite, with male and female parts on the same flower. That certainly makes life easier!
