Big shiny leaves and a deep bronze-y red colour make her one classy plant. Even better, she’s extremely low-maintenance.

    • Light watering

Very easy. When the top two inches of her soil are dry, it’s water time. She’ll cope if you’re a bit forgetful.

    • Most light conditions

She’ll be fine with shade, but you’ll see her at her best if you put her somewhere with bright, indirect light.

    • Humidity

She likes a good mist. Give her a squirt with a mister every few days to keep her leaves fresh and green.

  • If you know the name philodendron, it quite possibly brings to mind something like our dear oldPhil. The climbing philodendron is the most famous of the family, and has been a popular houseplant for decades, but there are around 500 different species in the philodendron family.

They come in all sorts of varieties but they largely have one thing in common: really great leaves. In almost all plants the leaves are heart-shaped. Philodendron is Greek for ‘heart tree’.

You’ll find them all over the world, but they’re mostly native to the Americas and West Indies. This particular philodendron grows outdoors in hotter climes but makes an excellent houseplant. It’s very forgiving of the occasional missed watering and lives contentedly in most light conditions.

    Did you know?

The leaves of philodendron are particularly tasty to Venezuelan red howler monkeys. Which might be helpful if you have any Venezuelan red howler monkeys coming over for dinner.
