  • Native to South America, the super rare ‘Pink Princess’ philodendron is highly prized for its spectacular dark heart-shaped leaves and striking pink variegation. This plant brings all the drama but none of the fuss. Pop it in a spot that gets bright, indirect light to keep the variegation looking pretty and pink. If your leaves start to look a little faded, move the plant to a brighter spot.

When it comes to watering, try to mimic the tropical showers in the wild. Let the top inch or so soil dry out, then water deeply. It won’t enjoy sitting in water, so let it drain thoroughly before putting the plant back in its decorative pot, and give the nursery pot a light squeeze to prevent waterlogged soil. To keep those fabulous leaves in top condition, mist them regularly to stop the edges from drying out and browning. Regularly clean the leaves with a damp cloth, and while you’re there you can do a quick health and pest check.

If you’re looking for a rare and unusual plant that’s easy to look after, this is the one to add to your collection.

This hybrid plant was patented in the 1970s, with the colour coming from its genes.
